What is Pilates?

Pilates is a series of exercises developed by Joseph Pilates, he was originally a circus performer boxer and gymnast in Germany. He was placed in forced internment in England on the outbreak of World War 1. The health conditions in the internment camps were not great but Pilates insisted that everyone in his cell block participate in daily exercise routines to help maintain both their physical and mental well-being. Pilates is a whole body approach, focusing on building strength from inside out, developing a strong stable base, which we can then add movement to. It was said by Joseph Pilates that in ten sessions you will feel the difference of Pilates; in twenty you will see the difference and in thirty you’ll have a whole new body!

What are the benefits of Pilates?

Pilates uses a unique series of physical exercises that help to correct muscular imbalances, improve posture, co-ordination, balance, strength and flexibility. Pilates is more than an exercise programme, it educates a new way of using your body increasing postural awareness. A great deal of back pain comes from poor posture, by helping to realign your spine and improving your posture, back pain can be reduced or eliminated entirely.

Who can do Pilates?

The short answer is anyone! If you are suffering with back pain, joint issues, injuries or work related stress. We are creatures that are designed to move, without movement we create more problems within our bodies.

Group matwork Pilates classes are held at the following times and locations on a weekly basis. These are catered to all levels, from absolute beginner to more advanced work. Please call to check availability and book directly with the leisure centres.

However, I do advise you speak to us prior to booking a group class if you have any issues so that we may assess the suitability.
